Patients and visitors at the CHUS – Hôpital Fleurimont now have a new digital tool designed to make it easier to find their way to appointments inside the Sherbrooke hospital.
Santé Québec Estrie – CHUS announced the tool on Sept. 22, saying finding the location of an appointment can be difficult for many patients.
The system includes 360-degree photos, maps and detailed directions that users can follow in real time on a mobile phone.
Nadia Mathieu, manager responsible for the Pavillon Enfant Soleil project and the new emergency department at CHUS – Hôpital Fleurimont, said the project was inspired by practices already used in other hospitals.
She said the goal is to make getting around the hospital simpler so patients have one less thing to worry about when they arrive for medical care.
How the tool works
People can access the system online at visitechus.ca, through navigation kiosks at entrances 1 and 3, or by scanning QR codes placed around the hospital.
Users enter their destination in the search bar and select their starting point.
The tool then displays the route. People using a mobile phone can follow the directions as they move through the hospital.
Eye-In Media implemented the technology, while the Fondation du CHUS provided financial support for the project.
Martin Clermont, executive director of the Fondation du CHUS, said the foundation backed the project because making it easier to move around the hospital can improve the experience for patients and visitors.
He said the technology fits with the foundation’s goal of making the hospital environment more welcoming.
Digital system will complement volunteers
The new tool is not intended to replace volunteers who help people find their way through the hospital.
Nathalie Azoulay, president and CEO of Eye-In Media, said people already comfortable using smartphones or GPS systems can use the system independently.
That can allow volunteers to spend more time helping people who need human assistance.
Azoulay also said the digital mapping of the hospital could eventually help analyze how people move through the building, anticipate needs and improve the user experience.
The navigation system is now available at CHUS – Hôpital Fleurimont.
