Sherbrooke police arrested five drivers for impaired driving over the course of three separate incidents between May 15 and May 17, including two checkpoint operations and one traffic collision.
The first arrest came on May 15 at approximately 11:45 p.m., after officers responded to a report of a vehicle striking a concrete barrier. Patrols intercepted a vehicle at the intersection of Chemin Duplessis and Chemin Lemire, where a 51-year-old driver was arrested for impaired driving. He subsequently failed breathalyzer testing at police headquarters.
Early on May 16, officers manning a sobriety checkpoint at King Street West and Richmond Street noticed signs of impairment in two drivers at around 1:25 a.m. A 49-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were both arrested and later failed their tests at headquarters.
A second checkpoint, held on May 17 at approximately 8:00 p.m. at 3000 12th Avenue North, resulted in the arrest of two additional drivers — a 31-year-old man and a 35-year-old man — who also failed their tests. A 30-year-old individual was additionally arrested at the scene for a municipal bylaw violation.
All five drivers have been released and must appear in criminal court at a later date. Their driver’s licences have been suspended and their vehicles seized.
