A white bicycle decorated with flowers has been installed on College Street in Lennoxville near the site of a collision that claimed the life of a cyclist.
The memorial was placed near 3367 College Street on Saturday morning. The installation was organized by Fabien Burnotte of Vélo Urbain Sherbrooke, according to information provided to The Pulse by Jean Pinard.
Photos provided by Pinard, which he said were sent to him by Burnotte, show the bicycle painted white and decorated with pink, white, yellow and blue flowers. It stands beneath a roadside sign reading “Respectons nos distances.”
Pinard said white bicycles are placed near the locations of fatal cycling collisions as memorials. He said another white bicycle is located near the intersection of Alcôve Street and Laliberté Road in Sherbrooke.
The College Street memorial follows a collision on July 3 in front of 3377 College Street. A 78-year-old cyclist was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died late the following evening.
Sherbrooke police previously said the cyclist and the vehicle involved had both been travelling west on College Street. Police were examining the possibility that the cyclist changed direction to the left before the collision.
Pinard said traffic was heavy when he visited the location Saturday morning. Based on his personal observations, he believed almost half of the passing vehicles were travelling faster than 50 kilometres per hour.
Correction: The man’s age was verified as 78, not 70.
